When stains set in to your carpet, they can be tough to remove. Your Castle Rock house cleaning service has some useful tips for removing them.
Whether you’re trying to remove the tasty ravioli you had the other day, some spilt alcoholic beverage from the party you threw, or another accident from your dog, don’t get overwhelmed. It can be done. Here is some of our best advice on removing general water-based carpet stains.
Castle Rock House Cleaning’s #1 Tip: Always Follow Instructions
Follow the cleaning instructions laid out in the manual your carpet came with. As a matter of fact, refer to your carpet’s manual first.
Not all carpets are made the same, so the manual will do the best job in telling you what you should and shouldn’t use to clean your carpet.
Get to Work Immediately
Don’t wait too long after the carpet gets stained to start cleaning up. The longer you wait after the scene of the crime, the harder it will be to clean things up. And if there are solids involved like food or excrement, pick those up immediately.
Gently Blot, Don’t Scrub
To avoid damaging the carpet fibers, don’t rub anything in. Gently blot the area using a wet cloth or paper towel. After removing the easy stuff, mix a cleaning solution and soak the cloth or paper towel in it. Again, gently blot the area.
Rinse Thoroughly
After using a cleaning solution, make sure you rinse using a cloth or paper towel soaked with cold water to remove the stain and solution. Warm or hot water might affect the color or texture of the carpet fibers.
Avoid Getting Carpet Too Wet
If you over-wet the carpet, you risk damaging the bottom padding of the carpet. Also, leaving the carpet wet for too long, over 24 hours, you risk the growth of bacteria and mildew on the carpet.
Dry Area with a Cloth or Paper Towel
Don’t air-dry the carpet; use a dry cloth or paper towel. Air drying your carpet can permanently change how the carpet looks.
Removing Most Water-Based Stains
For most water-based stains, use a simple four-parts water/one-part grease-fighting, liquid soap solution and follow the instructions above. If this isn’t enough, substitute the liquid soap in your solution for a stain remover.
Carpet stains can take a while to remove depending on the carpet you own and the stain you need to remove. For general maintenance of your carpet, we recommended having it professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months.
