It’s the New Year and the gyms are full, the library has loaned out all its health workbooks, and full cartons of cigarettes can be found in the trashcan. If organizing is on your list of New Year’s resolutions, let these tips from our home housekeeping services help you reach your goal.
Make a list of categories
You’ve heard “a place for everything and everything in its place.’ It’s a nice idea but how do you decide where to put each little item in your home? You create categories.
These categories include clothes, paperwork, incoming mail, books, hobby items, electronics etc. Once you have categories, you decide where to store each type of item. That way, when you need to find an extension cord, you’ll know to look where you keep all your electronics.
Create a System for Incoming Mail and Paperwork
Paperwork is the bane of organization. A decent system for paperwork will be twofold.
First, you’ll need a good file system. If you don’t have a filing cabinet, buy one. If you have very little paperwork, you may only need a file box.
Second, you’ll need a system for incoming mail. Get rid of junk mail as soon as it arrives. For the rest, have a place to store mail until you can get to it. Set aside time daily or weekly to go through mail
Go paperless wherever you can! Take an afternoon to set up online bill pay and call around to get off mailing lists. You’ll benefit for the rest of the year.
What about Keepsakes?
After paperwork, the biggest obstacle in de-cluttering is deciding what to do with keepsakes. What do you do with all those cards, pictures, letters, little gifts that you just can’t get rid off? We have a two part solution.
The first part is to choose a box to hold all your keepsakes and determine that you’ll limit yourself to the box. Go through it on a yearly basis to look through cards and letters and see what really matters to you. Each year, you’ll likely find yourself able to get rid of a few trinkets and you can hold on to what you need.
The second part is to take pictures of larger keepsakes and then give yourself the freedom to get rid of those belongings.
Call in the Professionals
If you need a power start, hire a professional to get you organized. They’ll help you de-clutter and find space for the belongings you keep. Sometimes, that extra help is all you need to get started down a new path towards a clean home and a clear mind.
