Remember when you’d go to a friend’s house when you were younger and their mom would make you pop off your shoes at the door? Well, that lady that you perceived as a germaphobe really had the right idea! What’s the deal with taking off your shoes when you enter a home? Let’s find out!
It’s pretty obvious that the number one reason to drop the shoes at the door is…germs! Think about what your sneakers go through in a day. Walking on sidewalks, visiting bathrooms and plenty of other places that are exposed to the public. Researchers at the University of Houston found that about 40% of shoes were carrying “C.diff” bacterium, which stands for Clostridium difficile. C.diff is nothing to mess with! This nasty bacteria can lead to intestinal problems or even sepsis. It was reported that C. diff, from the souls of your shoes, can spread around to other household areas such as toilets, tops and surfaces, and wherever floor dust was found. These spores can live on dry surfaces for a long time. So maybe it’s just better to leave this little terror as close to the door as you can.
Now that we’ve talked about the scary stuff we can move on to some of the less frightening reasons to shed the shoes.
Like your floors nice and shiny? So do we! That’s why we’re not letting our thick souls anywhere near our perfect hard wood. It’s possible to see some serious damage from your shoes as you stomp along. Avoid scuffing, scratches, staining and general wear and tear just by going barefoot.
All in all its up to you how you want to maintain your home. Wether you’re a shoe wearing family or not, there’s no shame! Here at Maid to Shine, we’ve just found it easier to maintain the cleanliness of your place if you’re not tracking in things from outside. What do you think? Shoes on or off, let us know in the comments!
